June Meeting

When: Tuesday, June 20, 2017 - 6:00 PM

Topic: From Hot Rodding to Hacking, Securing the Modern Automobile

This presentation will cover the history of the “hot rodding” scene in the 1950’s and how that evolved when the automotive industry moved to the digital era.

Today’s cars have millions of lines of code and hundreds of processors that drive features and functions that were only a dream a few short years ago. And with each generation of cyber technology, there are engineers and tinkerers who are interested in modifying the software in order to upgrade features, performance and looks.

As with all technology, today’s automotive-based systems can be used for good or bad purposes. This talk will also discuss some of the vulnerabilities that have been exploited as well as some of the problems that are still yet to come.

Who: Art Dahnert is a Managing Consultant who has over 19 years of experience in the software industry with over 8 years Application Security experience.

Mr. Dahnert has completed hundreds of security risk assessments, penetration tests and vulnerability assessments of web applications, desktop applications, and mobile applications. In addition, Mr. Dahnert has led the design and development of numerous security applications for multiple branches of the US military, developed code for the Windows operating system and Symantec Antivirus applications. Mr. Dahnert has instructed many Fortune 500 development teams on the subject of secure code practices. Mr. Dahnert also has an extensive and varied automotive background. Most recently working with Tier 1 suppliers for several European auto manufacturers to improve their secure SDLC processes and tooling. Mr. Dahnert also has certifications in several automotive technologies as well as experience working for large service departments for major automotive dealers.
