After graduating with a BSEE I worked in avionics. In school I learned that a server admin is the Security Engineer. Servers that were not properly configured were compromised; it was merely a matter of time. Those were different times. You might find work as an admin after breaking in somewhere; doing so was legal and generally helpful.
Maybe there is a "Right" way, today. The software failure rate among things that are airborne is 0 (zero). Anything else wouldn't be acceptable to most people. This rate doesn't exist in banking, medical devices, or in anything else we are required to trust.
