Projects/Internships/ Weekly Report 07 11 2014
From OWASP
Currently Working On
- Projects in JIRA:
- This week, I finally got all the projects, active and inactive into JIRA. When Johanna gets back from holiday, we will move forward with her plans for those projects in JIRA.
- I've made sure that all the projects in JIRA are labeled correctly. This included cross-checking the various project inventories, to make sure all the pages had the correct info. The only problem I experienced was a project that had already been entered into JIRA as an active projects was abandoned during the course of this task. This was fix quickly to reflect the project's inactive status.
- Wiki Accounts:
- This is an ongoing task that I will do every morning. I approve the accounts that have been confirmed by email and after two weeks, if they have not confirmed, I reject their request. This process helps to keep the queue at a manageable level.
- AppSec USA Social Media:
- This week I started the push for AppSec USA 2014. While there is a PR firm working with AppSec USA organizers. They are starting to generate social media, most of which I will be sending out starting next week. For this week, the tweets are the ones I have created.
- We started early with the social media to prevent the mistakes we made with AppSec EU, where social media didn't start really going out until a few weeks before the event. Hopefully, this will mean an increase in registration numbers.
Contract Work
- Contract Deliverables:
- I did a major push of social media for our partner contracts. This included sending out a combination of tweets and Facebook/blog posts, as well as messages to chapter leaders about promoting local events from our partners within their chapters. I still need to send out a promotion email to our chapter leaders in Singapore, but I am waiting until it's a better time locally before doing so.
- Global Initiatives Page:
- I noticed that the Global Initiatives page was neglected. The banners were off the page and the information was outdate, with broken links. As the community makes the transition to the new portal, it's not clear what will be done wit the initiatives page. For now, I am just cleaning up the page to make it more visually appealing and with information that is more up to date. I have removed the broken links and removed the large banners and replaced them with the new ones that were created last year, and put them to size. Until the portal is completed, I will be leaving this page alone for now.
Social Media
- Since, I'm really starting to take over the social media accounts of OWASP, I am working to put together a posting schedule, to keep constant information flowing on our social media accounts. I've put together a spreadsheet so the community can add what they would like to be tweeted. This spreadsheet will allow community members to promote their projects, their chapters and any other good news coming out of OWASP. There is already a social media policy set in place that I have put on the spreadsheet. It will be up to my discretion on what gets posted. If a tweet does not comply with the social media policy, I will not post it. The goal of the social media spreadsheet is to promote a positive image of OWASP.
Lessons Learned
- I'm wondering if the spreadsheet is working correctly. I sent the link out over the leaders list, and while I'm seeing plenty of activity around the spreadsheet, there is nothing added to the list. This could be either nobody has actually posted anything or there is a problem with the spreadsheet.
Additional Comments
Next week is my last week as intern. Starting the following Monday, I will be starting to full time contract work with OWASP. I haven't decided if I will continue to make weekly reports, as I will no longer be required of me. Starting next week, I will be starting another contract job outside of OWASP. While I will be gone during the day, I will be reachable by email in the early morning and in the evening. I will mostly be working in the evening and on the weekend. I will have my schedule updates on my weekly report next Friday when it is more finalized.
