I am currently CTO of Primus Services (www.primusservices.com) where I oversee the primary efforts of the organization based on security services. Before adding any service or technology we first identify the most popular or mainstream methodology. We then determine whether it's effective, and if it is effective we then determine whether there's a better way to provide the service or technology.
